Temporary Fix To Windows Live Messenger Appearing Offline Issue

Update: Microsoft Fixed The Problem Soon After This Post Was Published

Hey Everyone. Figured Out A Way To Make Messenger Let You Appear Online and Still Let You Use Windows Live Messenger.

The problem is, that they’re testing a new feature on the MSN servers which will appear in Windows Live Messenger 2010. This testing is causing everyone using the Windows Live Messenger client to appear offline for now, when they’re really online. This doesn’t stop you from talking, except you don’t know if they’re online or not.

Easy way to Fix it, till Microsoft finish their testing.

1. Sign Into Windows Live Messenger as normal. It will say online, but you’ll appear offline.

2. Open Internet Explorer (don’t think this works on Firefox, definitely doesn’t work on Chrome) and goto the normal Windows Live Hotmail website (either www.hotmail.com or mail.live.com) and sign in to your Hotmail.

3. In the Top Right Corner, there’s a Messenger menu which will probably say Available. Click it and pick Sign In From This Location. Once you do this, you’ll appear online to your contacts and they might talk to you.

This works because, other web messengers like Ebuddy and Web Messenger etc are working properly, but the Windows Live Messenger program isn’t. Web Messenger is the only one which lets you sign in to both Windows Live Messenger and the web version at the same time. So the Web Messenger is making you appear online, and then you can use Windows Live Messenger normally. Don’t Go Deleting Files on Your Computer – WILL NOT FIX IT!

na, this Web Messenger feature’s been here for over a year now – this issue has got nothing to do with Web Messenger, it’s just a way to get around it. The problem is purely with the connection from the Windows Live Messenger client to the server.

Hey, erm when this happened, I searched on google to solve this problem & I deleted some files, and only later did I realise what really happened, so will this cause any problems? Coz after I did the step, ALL my contacts names were just ‘example@hotmail.com’ means their names were their email addresses, so I was wondering when this problem is fixed & when they sign back on & off, will their name be the name that they set or will it still be the same way?

Ok this was what I did:
For Windows XP user, here are the steps:

    1. Click Start, click Run, copy and paste this message %USERPROFILE%Application DataMicrosoft and then press Enter. Delete the IdentityCRL folder.
    2. Click Start, click Run, copy and paste this message %ALLUSERSPROFILE%Application DataMicrosoft and then press Enter. Delete the IdentityCRL folder.
    3. Click Start, click Run, copy and paste this message %USERPROFILE%Local SettingsApplication DataMicrosoft and then press Enter. Delete the Windows Live Contacts folder.
    4. Click Start, click Run, copy and paste this message %USERPROFILE% and then press Enter. Delete the Contacts folder.

Yes, when your contacts appear online again their Display Names will re-appear. I often have to delete the windows live contacts folder when Messenger says “Your Contact list is not available. Please try again later”

I have been checking out your blog for the last few hours, and everything has been very informative and well written. I just wanted to let you know that for some reason this one doesn’t seem to work in Internet Explorer. On a side note, I was wondering if you wanted to swap blogroll links? My website is Router Table Plans if you’re interested. I hope to hear from you soon!
